Site Protection Activities
As part of our work we visit bim sites as much as we can, identifying threats and doing what work we can to protect sites from immediate threats.
The biggest threat is from uncontrolled fires. In the Red Lily Lagoon Area we are also very concerned about the impact of dust from the adjacent road which drifts over and settles on the paintings. Inappropriate access and behaviour from tourists is a concern at some sites.
Natural threats such as water washing over paintings, accumulation of minerals and natural rock weathering are hard to control. Our main job is to look carefully, understand what is happening and act where we can using the best of Bininj and balanda (non-Aboriginal) scientific knowledge.
